What
to know, what to do...
What
to Do if You Suspect a Head, Neck, or Back Injury
- Send
someone to call 911 Emergency Medical Services
- Do
not move the victim
- Take
care of any other injuries, such as bleeding
- Help
the victim remain as comfortable as possible. Support the head in the
position you find it, with soft rolled cloth material, or your hands
if necessary, until Emergency Medical Personnel arrive
- Continue
to watch over the victim, in case they develop a problem with airway,
breathing, or circulation
- If
airway is not clear, you can use the Jaw Thrust Maneuver, placing
your thumbs on the victim’s cheeks (while you are positioned
at the top of the head, facing towards the feet) and using the first
two fingers of your hands to lift gently upward on the back of the
jawbone just below the ears.
- If
rescue breathing becomes necessary, use jaw thrust while you deliver the rescue
breaths
- Reassure
the victim
- Do
not give the victim anything to eat or drink, even if thirsty
- Keep the victim from getting overheated
or chilled
