What to know, what to do...

These injuries can paralyze or kill, and should be treated as most serious. The skull contains the brain, the center of all nervous system controls and activity, contained within a fluid sac for protection from motion and shocks. The spinal cord, a bundle of nerve tissue, continues from the brain interlaced through the spine down through the neck and the back, also within a protective fluid envelope. Injuries anywhere along this pathway are very serious.

You Should Suspect a Head, Neck, or Back Injury If

The injury was caused by:

    • A fall
    • Diving
    • Auto accident
    • Penetration of the head, abdomen (gut), pelvic area, or chest such as a gunshot wound
    • Lightning strike, electrical shock, or any incident where victim is thrown

The victim is elderly and has fallen

The incident has broken the victim’s helmet, including motorcycle, bicycle, football, or industrial helmet

The Victim

    • has severe pain or pressure in the head, neck or back
    • reports tingling or loss of feeling in the hands, fingers, feet, or toes

Or if you observe

    • partial or complete loss of movement of any body part
    • Unusual bumps or depressions on the head or over the spine
    • Blood or other fluids in the ears or nose
    • Heavy bleeding on the head, neck or back
    • Seizure
    • Nausea or vomiting
    • Persistent or severe headache
    • Loss of Balance
    • Bruising of the head, especially behind the ears and/or around the eyes
