What to know, what to do...

You Should Suspect Heat Exhaustion if

  • Victim’s skin becomes cool, moist, pale or flushed
  • Victim complains of headache, nausea, or dizziness
  • Victim feels weak or exhausted
  • Victim is sweating heavily

 

What to Do if You Suspect Heat Exhaustion

  • Move the victim to a cool shaded place
  • Loosen tight clothing, or remove perspiration-soaked clothing
  • Apply cool, wet cloths, or mist the skin with cool water and fan the victim
  • If conscious, give cool water to drink
  • If unconscious send someone to call 911 Emergency Medical Services

 

You Should Suspect Heat Stroke if the Victim

  • Refuses water
  • Vomits
  • Loses consciousness

 

What to Do if You Suspect Heat Stroke

  • Send someone to call 911 Emergency Medical Services
  • Move the victim to a cool shaded place
  • Loosen tight clothing, or remove perspiration-soaked clothing
  • Apply ice or cold packs
    • Wrists
    • Ankles
    • Groin
    • Neck
    • Armpits
    • cool, wet cloths, or mist the skin with cool water and fan the victim
  • Continue to care for Airway, Breathing, and Circulation while awaiting the arrival of Emergency Medical Services
