If the choking victim loses consciousness, or you discover an unconscious unbreathing person and your rescue breaths don't go in...

If the conscious choking victim loses consciousness

·        Do not attempt to catch him/her

·        Let him/her slide to the ground (as they were leaning back a bit against you)

·        See if you can cushion the head as they land enough for the skull not to be injured by a hard fall or bounce

·        Check the mouth to see if you can observe and attempt to remove any of the obstruction

·        Attempt to make two rescue breaths

Then, or if you come upon an unbreathing unconscious person and your breaths won't go in...

·        Begin to give 15 chest compressions, to attempt removal of the object.

·        Continue this process, with every compression a separate attempt to clear the object until:

·        The object is cleared

·        Professional rescuers take over

·        The victim begins to cough, and partially clears the airway
