If the victim is not breathing, but the heart IS beating, and they have a pulse...

·        Rescue breathing provides oxygen to be circulated through the pumping heart, to maintain the life of the vital organs

·        Step One: Open the airway (after checking for pulse) using either Jaw/Thrust or Head Tilt/Chin Lift maneuver

·        Step Two: Place mouth over victim’s mouth and pinch nostrils shut, or place bag/mask over mouth and nose of the victim.

·        Step Three: Force air into the lungs until the chest gently rises using breath or bag.

·        Continue at a rate of ONE (1) BREATH EVERY FIVE (5) SECONDS, (12 breaths per minute), for approximately one minute.

·        Step Four: Check for pulse after the first minute (approximately 12 breaths), and confirm that there is still pulse, and recheck every few minutes after that.

·        Continue rescue breathing until:

·        Victim coughs and/or begins to breathe on his/her own

·        Professional rescuers take over care

·        You detect no pulse, then begin chest compressions of CPR.
