If you must leave an unconscious person who is lying on their back at any time, such as to phone 911 or the local emergency number, you should shift them onto their side, with their airway tilted slightly downwards...

·         Why? An unconscious person may vomit, and if they are positioned on their back, vomitus may be inhaled into the airway. This is a life threatening condition.

·         Positioning the person on their side, with their head supported by their upper arm and their hand, will prevent this

·         Their downturned face will allow gravity to drain any material from their mouth

·         When rolled into the Recovery Position, Roll them by the hip, while, with your other hand, stabilizing their head and neck, so that in so far as possible they roll in a ‘log-like’ fashion, keeping their spine and torso stable.

·         Bend the upper knee, and prop it on the ground in front of them, so that it provides stability, and they do not roll onto their stomach and face.
