If the victim does not seem to be conscious or awake...
Then
tap them gently, and shout, to see if they become alert.
Does the person not respond? Then look,
listen and feel for breathing in the position you find them, getting
your cheek within 2 inches of their nose and mouth if necessary, looking
down the torso, to try to detect breathing for up to 10 seconds.
Can you not detect breathing in the position
you find them, and they not on their back? Then support the head and
neck, take a grasp of their hip with the other hand, and GENTLY roll
them (in a 'loglike' fashion), onto their back, and look-listen-feel
for breathing again.
If they are not breathing, after you've
checked for about 10 seconds, check the scene and determine whether
the situation was perhaps a fall or an impact with some speed.
OPEN THE AIRWAY with either a JAW THRUST
maneuver (if there was impact or a fall), or with HEAD TILT/CHIN LIFT
maneuver (if there is no reason to suspect a head, neck, or back injury).
Give two (2) RESCUE BREATHS, by applying a
breathing barrier (if one is immediately available), pinching their
nostrils shut, and blowing into their mouth to gently inflate the lungs
(until the chest gently rises), two times.
Then CHECK FOR PULSE by placing two fingers
(not including the thumb) in the groove alongside their Adam's Apple
at the neck. The CAROTID ARTERY is located there, and should give a
detectable pulse if the heart is beating.
If there is a pulse, begin RESCUE BREATHING.
If there is no pulse, begin CPR chest
compressions.
